Asthma

Asthma is a chronic lung condition which is characterized by difficulty in breathing.

People with asthma have extra sensitive or hyperresponsive airways. The airways react by narrowing or obstructing when they become irritated. This makes it difficult for the air to move in and out. This narrowing or obstruction can cause one or a combination of wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and chest tightness.

This narrowing or obstruction is caused by an inflammation of the airways (meaning that the airways in the lungs become red, swollen and narrow) or bronchconstriction (meaning that the muscles that encircle the airways tighten or go into spasm).

Asthma monitoring is by double appointment with the practice nurse who liase with the doctors where necessary. Asthma patients should be reviewed at least yearly, depending on the severity of the condition and medication taken. If you have not seen a practice nurse in the past 12 months it is important to do as soon as possible, even if you are well.
