Breast Screening

We actively encourage women to examine their breasts regularly. Changes to look for are discharge from the nipple, puckering, inverted nipple thickening or lumps. Although most breast lumps are benign it is very important that women self examine their breasts and report any lumps or changes to a doctor. If you are unsure of how to examine your breasts please make an appointment with the doctor or nurse who will show you.

If you are between the ages of 50 and 64, you should receive a letter inviting you for screening as part of the national screening programme. A test called a mammogram is performed where each breast is x-rayed. This test will show up early abnormalities, which are not detected by manual examination
