Maternity Services
Pre Conception
If you are planning to have a baby it is advisable to discuss pre-conceptual care with the doctor. Please make an appointment at reception.
Ante Natal Care
Once pregnancy is confirmed we ask that you make an appointment with the doctor who will initiate your shared care with a local hospital. A community midwife will contact you, a scan will also be organised. Monitoring takes place throughout the pregnancy, taking place at the hospital/clinic and practice alternately.
An antenatal exam at the practice consists of checking blood pressure and testing urine. We will check that the baby is growing satisfactorily and from approximately 24 weeks of pregnancy we will listen to the baby’s heart rate.
You may require further antenatal screening tests which the doctor may discuss with you, if appropriate or for further information on different types of screening please ask your midwife.
Post Natal Care
You may be in hospital after the birth of your baby from a matter of hours to a few days depending on the delivery type and well-being of both you and your baby.
Once you have been discharged your midwife will visit you at home for around 10 days. After this care will be transferred to the Health Visitor who will support you throughout the baby’s early years. You will be sent a post natal appointment by post approximately 6 weeks after the birth. This is a 20 minute appointment in which a doctor will discuss any problems you may be experiencing and give you an examination to ensure that your body has returned to normal following childbirth. A smear test may be taken at this time if it is due. You will also have the opportunity to discuss and plan contraception.
